Dishwasher Repair in Charlotte, NC

A dishwasher full of standing water or gritty dishes is a problem you notice every night. We repair built-in dishwashers in homes, apartments and offices across Charlotte, NC and nearby towns.

Most dishwasher calls come down to a clogged filter or drain, a failed pump, a leaking door seal, or a bad latch or control. We find the cause, show you, and quote the repair.

Common dishwasher problems we fix

These are the likely causes, not a diagnosis. We confirm the cause with tests before we replace any part.

Water standing in the bottom

Likely cause
A clogged filter, a blocked drain hose or air gap, a new garbage disposal with its knockout plug still in place, or a failed drain pump.
What we do
We clean the filter and sump, check the hose, air gap and disposal connection, and test the drain pump.

Dishes come out dirty or gritty

Likely cause
A clogged filter, blocked spray arm holes, water that is not hot enough, a low fill from a weak inlet valve, or a failing wash pump.
What we do
We clean the filter and spray arms, check the water temperature and fill level, and test the wash motor.

Leaking onto the floor

Likely cause
A worn door gasket, a cracked spray arm, the wrong detergent making too many suds, a loose drain or supply connection, or a failed pump seal.
What we do
We find the leak point under the door or tub and replace the gasket, hose or seal.

Won't fill with water

Likely cause
The supply valve under the sink is closed, the float switch is stuck, or the inlet valve failed.
What we do
We check the supply, free the float, and test the inlet valve.

Dishes stay wet

Likely cause
Empty rinse aid, a failed heating element, or a vent or fan that is not working. Plastic items rarely dry fully in any dishwasher.
What we do
We test the heater and drying parts and check the settings.

Won't start or stops mid-cycle

Likely cause
A worn door latch or switch, the control lock turned on, a blown thermal fuse, or a failed control board.
What we do
We test the latch, the fuse and the control to find the fault.

Bad smell

Likely cause
Food trapped in the filter, the sump or a sagging drain hose.
What we do
We clean it out and show you where to check next time.

If your dishwasher leaks

  • Turn off the water supply valve under the kitchen sink.
  • Turn off the dishwasher's breaker before you reach under or behind it.

Quick checks before you book

  • Twist out and rinse the filter in the bottom of the tub. Many people never know it is there.
  • Run the kitchen faucet until the water is hot before you start a cycle.
  • Just installed a garbage disposal? The drain knockout plug may still be in place.
  • Make sure the control lock or child lock is off.

What we work on

  • Built-in dishwashers, 24-inch and 18-inch
  • Front-control and top-control models
  • Stainless and plastic tub models

Dishwasher repair questions

Why is there water in the bottom of my dishwasher?

A little water under the filter is normal on many models. Water standing above the filter usually means a clogged filter or drain hose, or a failed drain pump.

How often should I clean the dishwasher filter?

Many manufacturers suggest about once a month, and more often if you do not rinse dishes. Your owner's manual has the schedule for your model.

Why are my dishes still dirty?

Check the filter and the spray arms first, and run hot water at the sink before you start. Use fresh detergent. If that does not help, a weak fill or a failing wash pump is likely.

Is it worth repairing my dishwasher?

Drain pumps, latches, inlet valves, gaskets and heaters are usually worth fixing. A failed control board on an older, basic dishwasher is where replacing can make more sense. Call us and we will help you decide.

Why does my dishwasher smell?

Food caught in the filter and sump is the usual cause. Clean the filter, check the drain hose for a sag that holds water, and run an empty hot cycle with dishwasher cleaner.
