Ice Maker Repair in Charlotte, NC

An ice maker usually fails quietly. One day the bin is just empty. We repair refrigerator ice makers and freestanding and undercounter ice machines in homes across Charlotte, NC and nearby towns.

Most problems are the water supply, a frozen fill tube, a failed water inlet valve, or a freezer that is not cold enough. We test the water path and the ice maker, and quote the repair.

Common ice maker problems we fix

These are the likely causes, not a diagnosis. We confirm the cause with tests before we replace any part.

No ice at all

Likely cause
The ice maker is switched off or its shutoff arm is up, the water supply is off, the fill tube is frozen, the inlet valve failed, or the freezer is too warm.
What we do
We check the switch and the supply, thaw the fill tube, test the inlet valve, and check the freezer temperature.

Small, hollow or misshapen cubes

Likely cause
Low water pressure, a clogged water filter, or a weak inlet valve.
What we do
We check the pressure at the valve and the filter, and replace the valve if it is weak.

Ice clumped together in the bin

Likely cause
Ice sitting too long unused, a freezer that warms and refreezes, or a dispenser auger that jams.
What we do
We check the freezer temperature and defrost operation and free the auger.

Water leaking, or ice on the freezer floor

Likely cause
A fill tube out of place, a leaking inlet valve, or an ice maker that overfills.
What we do
We realign or replace the fill tube and test the valve.

Dispenser won't push out ice

Likely cause
An ice jam in the chute or bin, a failed auger motor, or a bad dispenser switch or door.
What we do
We clear the jam and test the motor and the switch.

Ice tastes or smells bad

Likely cause
An old water filter, stale ice, or food odors in the freezer.
What we do
We replace the filter, empty and clean the bin, and check the water line.

Ice machine makes very little ice

Likely cause
Scale buildup on the freezing plate, a dirty condenser, or a weak water pump in a freestanding machine.
What we do
We clean and descale the machine and test the pump and the condenser fan.

  • Door ice dispensers
  • Freestanding and undercounter ice machines

Ice maker repair questions

Why is my ice maker not making ice?

Check the switch, the shutoff arm and the freezer temperature first. If those are fine, a frozen fill tube or a failed water inlet valve is the most likely cause.

How long does a new ice maker take to make ice?

Usually about a day after it is connected and the freezer is cold. Throw out the first few batches to clear the new water line.

How often should I change the refrigerator water filter?

Most manufacturers suggest about every six months, or sooner if the ice or water tastes off or the flow slows down.

Why are my ice cubes small or hollow?

The ice maker is not getting enough water. A clogged filter, low water pressure or a weak inlet valve are the usual reasons.

Do you repair standalone ice machines?

Yes. We repair freestanding and undercounter ice machines in homes, along with refrigerator ice makers.
