Dryer Repair in Charlotte, NC

When the dryer stops heating, laundry piles up fast. We repair gas and electric dryers in homes, apartments and laundromats across Charlotte, NC and nearby towns.

A dryer that runs cold or needs two cycles to dry usually has a blown thermal fuse, a failed heating element or igniter, or a blocked vent. We test the parts, check the airflow, and quote the repair. A blocked vent is a fire risk, so we check the airflow too.

Common dryer problems we fix

These are the likely causes, not a diagnosis. We confirm the cause with tests before we replace any part.

Runs but no heat (electric)

Likely cause
A blown thermal fuse, a burned-out heating element, a failed thermostat, or only half of the 240-volt power reaching the dryer because one side of the breaker tripped.
What we do
We test the element, fuses and thermostats, and check the power at the outlet. If a fuse blew, we also look for the airflow problem that blew it.

Runs but no heat (gas)

Likely cause
A weak igniter, a failed flame sensor, or bad gas valve coils.
What we do
We watch the ignition sequence and test the igniter, sensor and coils to find the failed part.

Takes too long to dry

Likely cause
A full lint screen or a clogged vent, a crushed vent hose behind the dryer, or dirty moisture sensor bars that end the cycle early.
What we do
We check airflow at the outside vent, the hose and the lint path, and clean the moisture sensor bars.

Drum won't turn, but the motor hums

Likely cause
A broken drive belt or a worn idler pulley.
What we do
We replace the belt and check the pulley and drum rollers while the dryer is open.

Won't start at all

Likely cause
A failed door switch, a blown thermal fuse (on many models it shuts off the motor too), a bad start switch, or no power at the outlet.
What we do
We test the door switch, the fuse and the start circuit, and check the outlet.

Squealing, thumping or scraping

Likely cause
Worn drum rollers, idler pulley, drum glides or rear bearing.
What we do
We open the cabinet, find the worn part, and replace it.

Very hot on the outside, or a burning smell

Likely cause
Lint packed in the vent or inside the cabinet, or a failed thermostat.
What we do
Stop using it. We clear lint from inside the dryer, check the vent run and test the safety thermostats.

Dryer fire and gas safety

  • Clean the lint screen before every load.
  • Failure to clean is the leading cause of home dryer fires, according to the U.S. Fire Administration. Have the vent duct cleaned out at least once a year.
  • Use metal vent duct. Thin plastic or foil accordion duct crushes easily and can burn.
  • Warning signs: clothes take longer to dry, the top of the dryer gets very hot, or you smell something burning.
  • If you smell gas, leave the home now. Do not flip light switches or use your phone inside. Call your gas company's emergency line or 911 from outside.

Based on U.S. Fire Administration and NFPA dryer safety guidance.

Quick checks before you book

  • Clean the lint screen and shine a flashlight into the slot below it.
  • Pull the dryer out and make sure the vent hose is not crushed or kinked.
  • Go outside while it runs. You should feel strong, warm air at the vent hood.
  • Electric dryer with no heat? Check the breaker panel. A dryer uses a double breaker, and one half can trip.

Dryer repair questions

Why does my dryer run but not heat?

On an electric dryer, the usual causes are a blown thermal fuse, a failed heating element or a half-tripped breaker. On a gas dryer, it is usually the igniter or the gas valve coils. A blown fuse is often a sign of a blocked vent, so the vent needs a look too.

Is the problem the dryer or the vent?

Feel the air at the outside vent hood while the dryer runs. Weak or cool air points to a blocked vent. Strong, warm air with clothes that stay damp points to the dryer or its moisture sensor.

How often should the dryer vent be cleaned?

The National Fire Protection Association says at least once a year, and more often if drying starts to take longer. Long vent runs, and vents that go up through the roof, clog faster.

Do you repair gas dryers?

Yes. We repair both gas and electric dryers.

Is my dryer worth repairing?

Most dryer repairs are belts, rollers, fuses, elements and igniters, and on a dryer in good shape a repair usually makes sense. On an older dryer with a bigger failure, compare the repair with replacing it. Call us and we will help you decide.
