From Wright's Station to today
The settlement dates to 1848, when the Woodlawn Mill went up on the South Fork. When the railroad was graded through in 1870, the small depot was called Wright's Station, after the nearest resident. Those mill and railroad roots still show in the town's oldest streets.
Lowell is compact, about 2.7 square miles, so most homes are a short drive from I-85. George Poston Park sits just northwest of town on Lowell-Spencer Mountain Road.

Lowell homes, by the numbers
Lowell has about 3,800 people in roughly 1,900 homes, according to the Census Bureau's 2020 to 2024 survey. Its housing leans old: about 41% of homes are older than 1960 and about 57% were built before 1980. The median home was built in 1974. About 35% date from 2000 or later.
About 27% of homes are rented and about 4% are mobile homes. Only about 6% of homes were built in 2010 or later, so most of the newer housing dates from the 2000s.
Lowell is a town of houses. About 89% of homes are detached, and about 73% are owner-occupied. Utility gas heats about 59% of homes, one of the higher shares in Gaston County.
Gas service in a town this old means many Lowell kitchens and laundry rooms have had their gas lines extended or moved over the decades. When you book a gas dryer or range repair, tell us where the shutoff valve is if you know.
