Midland is a town in southern Cabarrus County, about 18 miles east of Uptown Charlotte in a straight line. It began as a railroad town around 1913 and got its name from sitting about halfway between Charlotte and Oakboro on the line. It was incorporated in 2000.

Older than the town
Before Midland, there was Garmon, a community a few miles east that grew around Michael Garmon's mill in the late 1700s, and Cabarrus Station, an earlier rail stop now inside the town limits. Muddy Creek flows just south of the center.
The town covers about 13 square miles of gently rolling land, and the Midland post office runs rural routes into parts of four counties. If you live out on one of them, tell us the nearest crossroad when you book.

Midland homes, by the numbers
Midland has about 4,900 people in roughly 1,800 homes, according to the Census Bureau's 2020 to 2024 survey. It is one of the newest towns on our list: the median home was built in 2010, about 49% of homes went up in 2010 or later, and about two-thirds date from 2000 or later.
About 16% of homes are rented. About 17% went up before 1980, decades before the town was incorporated in 2000, and about 6% were built in 2020 or later.
About 87% of homes are detached houses and about 6% are mobile homes. About 84% are owner-occupied. Most homes heat with electricity (about 74%), and only about 20% use utility gas.
With electricity heating three of every four homes, most Midland dryers and ranges are electric too. The common electric dryer failures are a heating element, a thermal fuse or a thermostat, and a clogged vent is often what caused them.
