Old mill country on the South Fork

Lincolnton sits on the northeast bank of the South Fork, where Clark Creek joins it. Water power from these streams built the area's early industry, and Lincolnton's history includes what is described as the first cotton mill built south of the Potomac River.

The city has three recognized historic districts: the downtown commercial district, South Aspen Street and West Main Street. Many of the homes in and around them are older, with kitchens and laundry spaces built long before today's appliance sizes.

Lincolnton homes, by the numbers

Lincolnton has about 11,800 people in roughly 5,300 homes, according to the Census Bureau's 2020 to 2024 survey. It is one of the few places in our area where renters outnumber owners: about 54% of homes are rented and 46% are owner-occupied.

About 14% of homes were built in 2010 or later.

The housing is older than average. The median home was built in 1973, about 55% went up before 1980, and about 34% are older than 1960. About 60% of homes are detached houses, about 18% are duplexes and small buildings, and about 18% are in buildings with five or more units. Electricity heats about 64% of homes.

In a duplex or an older apartment, the washer and dryer often share a small closet, and the dryer vent can run a long way to the outside. A long vent makes a dryer slow even when nothing is broken, so we check it along with the dryer.
